You may wish to keep a reading log to help you be prepared for your assessment.

1.      Characters: How are the characters described?  What are their physical traits?  How is their personality depicted?  What specific role do they play in the development of the work?  What kind of changes do they go through, and what kind of challenges do they face?

2.      Setting: Where and when does the story take place? What is significant about the time and place?  Why do you think the author may have chosen these elements?

3.      Plot: What happens?  What is included in the exposition and the rising action?  What is the conflict?  What is the climax of the story?  How does the story conclude?

4.      Theme:  Consider what kind of message the author is trying to convey to the reader.  In a sentence or two, write the main idea that the author is writing about.

5.      Point of view:  Who is telling the story?  How does that affect the way the story unfolds?

6.      Structure:  How does the story unfold?  Is it told in chronological order?  How does that impact the reader?

7.      Style:  What devices does the author use to tell the story?  Does the author use figurative language?  Simple or complex sentence structure? What is the diction like that the author chooses to use?

8.      Personal impact:  How did this story affect you?  Can you relate it to an experience in your life?  Did it challenge or confirm your ideas and beliefs?
